SmartKiosk Media will deliver Digital-Out-Of-Home (DOOH) advertising via interactive “SmartKiosks,” smartphones, internet social networking sites, and a unique format of direct mail print advertising to consumer households.

Now this is pretty amazing and along the same line as my idea. My idea again is to use the web, print and outdoor advertising to collect coupons via a coupon code that can be collected using your phone number, on the web or by texting. On the web these ads can be on social networking sites or use of local targeting software agencies.

The kiosks in my theory was for pre-shopping and collecting of additional deals of the day at your grocer or mall outlet. When these coupons are then validated at the point of purchase using your phone, and it doesn’t have to be a smart phone, then the retailer is sent the validation as well, eliminating cheating coupons.

The final step is the print media sent to the users house. Now I am pretty sure that the material this company is sending is just Direct Mail full of ads, even if they are targeted or not. My idea is to link your magazines and newspapers to your shopping history, something you can also tailor online. Then when the magazines and newspapers of your choice come to your house they are full of relevant advertising that make a difference to you.

With all the screaming and hollering about the print industry dying it is any wonder why they haven’t tried to absorb this idea. But the good thing is, if I can get the numbers, I now have something to pull from to allocate risk analyses and profit margins. So, go Smart Kiosks!

This article is about the traditional mobile couponing campaigns underway. My mom sent this to me and here was my response:

That is not what I am doing but very effective. I allow users to collect the coupons rather than just be an open portal to discounts that they may or may not use, thus receiving anything and everything. Also here in China I have to deal with no computers at the point of purchase but still have to verify that the coupon is valid. I can also go from print to feed to mobile. Not just surfing the net to feed to mobile. By feed I mean that the users have a personal account at advertual.com and can collect more coupons from around the Internet, set their settings for advertisers to direct to sell to them, and access their feed of coupons from their phone, much like what I see in this article. Sounds the same but mine can work for any retailer no matter how big or small with point of sale computers or not.

I checked out the sites that were in the article. The coupons are so un engaging it is the exact same as cutting coupons the way you used to except on the computer. Completely boring. There is no sale done by the retailer except the money off. Apparently the sale already has to be made then you have to find the coupon and then save. My clickboard makes the sale, gives you the discount, and then rewards you at the final purchase. This is advertual, not couponing.

I found a really cool feature on Google Analytics. I can actually follow someone as they travel through my site going from page to page. It shows me the percent of people who clicked on different links on a particular page. So as Alvin and his company from Shanghai traversed my site on Tuesday I could actually follow them as the went from home screen to Clickcard, to Clickboards, to the About page and then the the Clickcard category and so forth. I couldn’t tell which exact button was clicked by who because there was more than one person searching my site that day, but I could see two or three distinct paths.

The problem however is when they visited the Clickboard page. The Clickboards are supposed to be ads. Now Google Analytics will track ads but they have to be registered. My Clickboards are not registered, so I was unable to see if they clicked on them and how many times and how far they went through the Clickboards. Very upsetting because that was kind of the point of their visit. Tomorrow I will have to find out how to register my Clickboards with the Google Analytics. My first assumption is to add the tag to the Flash coding and then repost them. And another way is somehow with this WordPress site. It has an ad tracker too but haven’t explored this in detail yet. Both options seem viable but I like the new Google Analytics tool so I am going to explore that first.

I guess I haven’t mentioned why I am so interested in mGuanxi and why I switched my focus from Jin Magazine. First thing is first i guess, Richard, my current boss here at Jin Magazine, had the opportunity to review my proposal, well at least I put it in front of him. Whether he looked at the numbers or not, I can’t say, but he refused the new project based on the fact that he is not looking to invest any more time or money into the Jin Media and rather focus on his logistics business.

So that said I needed new options, I was going to re propose to him but now that I think about it, that would have been futile. So as the opportunity came to my attention when talking to Don Stewart, an indirect colleague of mine here in the office, who at one point offered himself as an angel investor, he brought to my attention several services that are in the same field I am pursuing. One of which was mGuanxi. Unlike the other text discount services he put before me, this media had a very unique web portal.

This web portal had the ability for people to come together and add contacts and join groups, take polls, blog, and send messages. Much like other social media sites. However this had no connection to their mobile outlet and the benefit to the users over Facebook and local forum websites was quite minimal. But to me, this was a perfect platform to develop Clickboards.

By adding another tab which would represent Clickboards, using the clicker icon, users would enter a section of the website where they could manage their mobile coupons and acquire Clickboards. Here they could share with their groups or contacts and friends and redeem points for luxury vouchers. Really this is the high dive that could really put Clickboards on the map. These are the top four reasons I had Don tell Alvin of mGuanxi why he should listen to me and my proposal:

Gives a reason for people to interact (to share their coupons, rewards, freebies and earn more)

Makes service free for user and adds performance for clients

Advertisers can decide what and to whom they reward

Breaches the gap between behavioral marketing and static impressions

So far, I have no response and neither does Don from Alvin Graylin from mGuanxi owner of the parent company mInfo. He may think he is a little taller than me in his high heeled boots and can’t see the relevance of a Jin Magazine editor having come up with a good idea for him because he is a dual major MIT graduate. But if he could stop himself a minute and so could the rest of you to review what I keep going on about, he may see the true validity that my project has. Or maybe he is just on vacation and I need to sit back myself for a second.

The real reason I am going after my boss and mGuanxi is so that I don’t have to develop my own brand image. Jin has a name which would make the Jin Card more recognizable here in Tianjin, and although mGuanxi isn’t a true silver dollar in terms of user interaction, it does have some strength in its name, something that I could definitely build upon.

It kind of struck me today how easy it is to protect myself in China. Everyone else who wants to copy me can, because it is just as easy for them to protect themselves as well. But the thing that is most important impediment that must be in place is to at least keep out your competitors. Yes I say that everyone can copy a Clickboard, but that they can not copy my logo. Big deal they will still copy my logo and my moving pointer ‘clicker icon’. I mean the little hand pointer that moves back and forth encouraging people to click, well I guess that is a given and everyone is going to have to use that. And the little star at the end saying that the coupon will connect them to Clickboards.net, well they might use that too.

And if in the end they do connect the coupons and discounts to my site what am I to do. Especially if someone keeps redeeming more and more coupons.

Well if in fact I find the technology to tag the coupons that are sent to my site, well guess what, they will also be tagged. Just like the users who log in to my site, the coupons themselves when connected to my site will have to be logged in. They will go into a bay at first to be authenticated. After a few checks for multiples and validity they will then be sent to the users account. This is in fact the downfall of my site. Pre-authenticated Clickboards being sent to users profiles so they can earn points and basically live for free. The bay is the most important element.

But if in fact mobile coupons and Clickboards do in fact get sent to my site there will be no problem. What you have to see here is that websites will eventually be talking to one another. There is no more static, there is no interactive, there is now multi-active. Meaning you will be on more than one website at once. They will be acting together to produce an end product. All from different suppliers, all for different users.

Just like credit cards verify account balances, websites will be updated continuously based on input, and the output will at the same time be updating a third site, or the congruous site which is the harmonious extension of the site that you are currently experiencing from the meld of sites which you are viewing.

Keeping people out is not a problem. Having multiple sites acting together is. But for now, you can practice hacking me when the site is ready, I enjoy the attention and don’t mind the mess, I have time to clean it up and learn from the experience. Hopefully this will happen in the beginning, but that is still a couple months down the road.

Well if there is a market that needs to be broken into, it is the mobile market. Daily I read about the big dollar numbers being thrown at any company that says they can tap into this sector and provide results.

Well my oldest friend just looked at my site the other day. He only looked at it for five minutes according to my Google Analytics, but anyway he went to at least five pages and got the idea within minutes.

He had a break through though. His idea was to incorporate Clickboards outside the Internet. He was saying each add would have a PIN number. Now this is already true in my case to catalog the ads. However he was a little more dynamic. His example was for a 50% off coupon at the Gap. You would text 50OFFGAP, to put it simply to your online account number. This is much like Twitter and will most assuredly be one of my first projects after putting the website in place.

I just need to find out what number they text the promotion code to have the discount stored automatically on their Clickboards.net account. Research Twitter more now, not that I would still know how it works from the inside.

It is really easy. I have actually come up with two different ways to make a Clickboard, both using Flash. The first uses multiple scenes. What you do is set your canvas size the the size of the banner you are making. Then in four separate scenes you cover the canvas in a button. The buttons as stated lead the sale progressively through the scenes. And the buttons can be as extensive and complex as you can imagine with Flash. All that you need to do is put stops on each scene and then link each button to the next scene. The final scene will be the button that connects to the URL Clickboards.net.

The second method uses one scene. Here you use four key frames and put stop actions on the key frames. The click action will then allow the Clickboard to keep playing. The final frame is again the URL action.

Basically one method uses the button to create action and the other uses the key frames.

I personally am not an expert and my rudimentary method is still in the research phase of asking questions a lot. I wish I was back in Flash class and I would have my first Clickboard done in about forty-five minutes.

Oh yea and the reason people know they can click on these banners with buttons is because my icon will appear in the lower right hand corner of each button or step in the scene.

Go make one now!

Great news, I think I am going to be able to do the Clickboards.net locally here in Tianjin. This new portable receipt printer that I found makes everything happen. Basically as long as their is a computer in the restaurant this will work. And from what I found there always is.

The printer is programmable and every individual one you can upload the store logos and id for the printer onto it. Then by simply having linked to the computer through IrDA, Bluetooth, Infra-Red, or WLAN the coupons from Clickboards.net can be printed for the store at the store.

Currently I am thinking all discounts that the user has for the store will all be printed and then they will have to select at the table or check out which ones they want to use. The store keeps the copy of the used coupon(s) and the user takes the rest home with him. He can re-enter the coupons back onto his profile when he gets home with the pin number for the coupon.

But better yet, this portable printer has the option of coming with a magnetic card and smart card reader.

Brilliant

An innovation that is not even innovative. Have we been stuck in the mud that long to actually be impressed by something like this?

Yahoo is saying they can better target ads to the content based search on their site. Well isn’t that exactly how they come up with the actual content that they put on their site. Now they are saying the ads are going to be more closely related to the content that is on the site. So what! Put makeup ads next to the makeup content, put fashion ads next to the fashion content, put the sports equipment next to the sports content. Big deal.

The Google expandable ads are a joke too. You still have to click on them. So you really don’t know if you are getting an expandable ad or sent to the site. So what is the difference, it’s just a levy. So you really want to pay for more that?

The debate is on whether unique users are coming to your site. Right now cookies are the only way to see how many visitors you are getting and this could be overrated by almost three times because of the deletion of cookies. And you know this means advertisers will pay more but are now becoming cautious because they want their money’s worth.

So if a site is using their own measuring tools like Google AdSense or their host providers numbers, and these all vary based on the tools used to measure, then where are you going to get numbers that are actually relevant to your product and people’s response.

Clickboards.net acts a second party seller. Although you do not buy anything on the site, you can acquire information and promotions used to buy the products as well as package deals and rebates for products. Then when you decide to buy, either directed to the advertisers site, or by going to the brick and mortar store, that is when the first interaction between buyer and seller takes place. So really the advertiser takes themselves completely out of the picture except for the sale, which is really the way it is supposed to be.
